Activities

Nature Walk

  • Take the class for a nature walk and have them create a naturalist journal. We will take pictures to use in our class naturalist journal, draw pictures, and write descriptions. Groups will also have their own and can add details from our classroom journal to their own.

Animals and Plants From Our State

  • Calpurnia tried to study all the plants and animals from her state of Texas. Research a plant of animal from North Carolina and complete a research project about your animal. The research project will be composed of a research paper and some sort of display. We will then have a scientist convention where parents are invited to come join us and students present their research to the class as experts on their animal or plant.

Domestic Roles

  • The class will be conducted as a class from the 1800s would have been. We will have foods from that time period and do activities that were done during that time. We will discuss the roles of men and women in the 1800s and then practice some of these specific activities.

Piano Composers

  • Learning the piano was very important in Calpurnia Tate’s life. In the book, it lists specific composers who were the favorites of her mother, her piano teacher, her best friend, etc. Choose a composer that you enjoy and do a powerpoint presentation about him or her. Make sure there are lots of musical excerpts.
